The Archdeaconry of the East Punjab in the Diocese of Lahore of the Church of India Burma and Celyon was formed in 1949 and the Rt Rev C R H Wilkinson was appointed as the Assistant Bishop of Lahore to oversee the episcopal and Pastoral need of the Archdeaconry in India. Due to the political situation it was no longer possible to remain in the diocese of Lahore which was now in a different country. The Church in Punjab needed its own Bishop and the Diocese. The East Punjab Archdeaconry was raised to the status of missionary Diocese of Amritsar in 1953, (The Diocese of Amritsar was declared fully organised and a self relient diocese on 1966). The diocese is led by the Bishop of Amritsar. Rt Rev C R H Wilkinson was enthroned as the first Bishop of Amritsar in St Paul's Cathedral Ambala. The diocesan bishops are elected, consecrated, appointed and enthroned by the Church's highest Governing bodies. The Bishop of Amritsar is also known as His Lordship The Chairman of Amritsar Diocesan Trust Association. The Diocese of Amritsar alongwith other 12 dioceses ie. of Calcutta, Bombay, Nagpur, Lucknow, Chotnagpur, Assam, nasik, Delhi, Bhagalpur, Barrackpore, Nandyal and Andaman & Nicobar entered into Church union of the six denominations and became the part of the Church of North India.
