  • Bishop of Amritsar Diocese,CNI, Eric Alexander (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
The Archdeaconry of the East Punjab in the Diocese of Lahore of the Church of India Burma and Celyon was formed in 1949 and the Rt Rev C R H Wilkinson was appointed as the Assistant Bishop of Lahore to oversee the episcopal and Pastoral need of the Archdeaconry in India. Due to the political situation it was no longer possible to remain in the diocese of Lahore which was now in a different country. The Church in Punjab needed its own Bishop and the Diocese. The East Punjab Archdeaconry was raised to the status of missionary Diocese of Amritsar in 1953, (The Diocese of Amritsar was declared fully organised and a self relient diocese on 1966). The diocese is led by the Bishop of Amritsar. Rt Rev C R H Wilkinson was enthroned as the first Bishop of Amritsar in St Paul's Cathedral Ambala. The diocesan bishops are elected, consecrated, appointed and enthroned by the Church's highest Governing bodies. The Bishop of Amritsar is also known as His Lordship The Chairman of Amritsar Diocesan Trust Association. The Diocese of Amritsar alongwith other 12 dioceses ie. of Calcutta, Bombay, Nagpur, Lucknow, Chotnagpur, Assam, nasik, Delhi, Bhagalpur, Barrackpore, Nandyal and Andaman & Nicobar entered into Church union of the six denominations and became the part of the Church of North India. The list of the Bishops of Amritsar is given below The Rt Rev C R Heber Wilkinson DD Bishop of Amritsar (consecrated 1951) The Rt Rev Kenneth D W Anand BD Bishop of Amritsar (consecrated 1959) The Rt Rev Eric S Nasir MA BT DD Bishop of Amritsar (translated from Assam consecrated 1962) The Rt Rev Sam Ghulam Qadir Bishop of Amritsar (consecrated1970) The Rt Rev Ernest John BD Episcopal commissiary (Consecrated 1966 Bishop of Nandyal) The Rt Rev Aziz Williams MA BD Bishop of Amritsar (Consecrated 1978) The Rt Rev Anand Chandu Lal BA BD DD Bishop of Amritsar (Consecrated 1981) The Rt Rev P K Samantaroy BA BD Mth Bishop of Amritsar (Consecrated 1999 Present Bishop)

The so called enmity of communities is more a product of Western imagination and projection than a reality of Indian history. It is true that there are lots of enmities among Indians, including communal ones, but by and large the Indians always lived peacefully with each other. In Indian tradition it is not necessary to immediately get rid of or harm or kill your enemy. Violence is done during special events like riots that do not happen very often and stop soon with common agreement. It is difficult for Westerners to understand, as Western people have a culture of hurry. They have to settle their enmities hurriedly, which naturally requires killing enemies at once. The Indian habit is to live with problems without making efforts for a quick solution. Indian peace is a tense peace, but it is peace all the same. It is the only kind of peace that is possible in large human populations.
