Amritsar, (Punjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ, meaning: The Lake of the Holy Nectar) is the administrative headquarter of the Amritsar District in Punjab, India. The 2011Indian census reported the population to be over 1,132,383 and that of the entire district to number just over 2,490,656.
It is home to the Harimandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, and is the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh Religion.
Another place of historical importance in Amritsar is Jallian-wala Bagh.
